For Christmas I received a pair of stainless steel press molds for musubi / onigiri. I am fortunate to have a takeout place near my office that makes good musubi (https://musubikaiseattle.com/). I mentioned I liked that, I like to cook, someone got me this gift, here we are.
I made some spam musubi to get familiar with the new press. When next it was time to use the onigiri press, I was indecisive about what filling to use. I found myself thinking of more non-traditional things to use. The thought exercise quickly became both creative and absurd. If you've ever engaged in the "is a hot dog a sandwich?" discussion, you're familiar with how this went.
So here's the plan. I am going to make many onigiri and musubi this year. I am going to take pictures of them. I am going to write some things to go with them.
Why do this thing?
Because this is a comic book account
Cooking Papa brought us onigirazu - an onigiri, but more in the shape of a sandwich. I'm thinking of something similar, but more like "what if I took sandwich ingredients and made rice balls"? I don't intend to just stick to "sandwich" for inspiration either, but it's a good place to start.
Because cooking is fun
Because science advances with reproducible research
Reddit user DO_U_EVN_SPAGHETTI did the painstaking research to rate a bunch of foods both without and with rice. 10/10 with rice. I don't plan to intentionally seek out things I think will taste bad, but I continue that tradition.
Because I enjoy reading Notable Sandwiches
I intend to begin with the bacon butty.
